Community, You’re Already Accepted!
It’s Thursday night and once again I’ll miss the show Community due to a board meeting. It’s a show that started this fall “about a misfit study group at a community college” with Chevy Chase as a former CEO of moist towlette company. I watched some hilarious clips on Hulu.com, and cracked up at the fake promotional videos in their clips. For example, “Greendale Community College: You’re Already Accepted!” Complete with a fake Greendale Community College website, this show and the media around it look like they’re on the way to being a “classic.”
I’m not sure if making fun of community colleges is quite the right track for blogging about communities and community management, but it’s a fun clip. You have to keep your sense of humor in all areas of community. The show points out the basics of human nature and relating to one another that are universal despite age, gender, or class (pun intended).
Community managers will agree that communities are powerful forces and can get so much done when organized well and motivated to work towards a common goal. It’s not always easy to learn how to move and shake the movers and shakers! I’m reading and re-reading sections of Jono Bacon’s Art of Community book where he describes great methods for “herding cats” as he describes it. In the same line of thought, but without the cat whispering, I love this post on 1 x 57 titled The Dance of Community Management, where Amy Senger describes four “dance steps” to community management – keep it hot, cool, loose, and tight. She says, “Play and humor can not only bond community members but can also be the best facilitators of innovation and creativity.” A great read, with thoughtful takeaways, which makes for a great blog post.
When your community needs a fresh humor infusion, where do you turn?
